CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training 2025-26
CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) is a training program designed to equip staff with skills to prevent and manage challenging behaviors in crisis situations. It emphasizes proactive responses, de-escalation techniques, and safe disengagements, with the goal of using physical interventions as a last resort. This training meets a portion of the requirements for key identified personnel, as required by the Michigan Department of Education’s Policy for the Emergency Use of Seclusion and Restraint.
This course is for new participants, those who have a lapsed Blue Card, or those needing a refresher.

Audience: Teachers PreK – grade 12, administrators, counselors, ISD staff, paraprofessionals, support staff, community partners/agencies

Learner Outcomes
Identify and know how to respond to varying levels of crisis behaviors.
Develop limit-setting strategies to de-escalate crisis behavior.
Understand the importance of proactive strategies to reduce crisis behavior.
Understand the principles of Trauma Informed Care
Understand the risks of restraints and their use only as a last resort.
Learn safety interventions and physical skills, including restraint, to maximize safety and minimize harm.
Pending approval, State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) will be offered for this training. Further information will be provided by the course instructor at the session.
