Michigan’s State Standards
The Michigan Department of Education has adopted its State Standards – a set of rigorous K-12 curriculum standards, for each student to meet during their K-12 experience in public education in both Math and English Language Arts. The State Standards in Science and Social Studies are currently under development.
Michigan’s State Standards define the knowledge and skills students should have acquired within their K-12 educational experience in order to graduate high school, be able to succeed in entry-level credit-bearing academic college courses, and/or engage in workforce training programs.
The standards:
- are aligned with college and work expectations.
- are clear, understandable and consistent.
- include rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher order skills.
- build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards.
- are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society.
- are evidence-based.
These standards provide access to rigorous academic content standards for students with disabilities like never before. The continued development of research-based instructional practices and a focus on their effective implementation for mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) instruction for all students, including those with disabilities, will improve student performance levels.
