NEW in summer 2021!

Location: Pellston Public Schools campus

Northwest Michigan Works! has partnered with Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District to provide an opportunity for students interested in exploring the Construction career pathway.

Up to 12 students between the ages of 16 and 20, who are WIOA eligible, will spend part of their summer learning and applying foundational construction skills through a pre-apprenticeship program while they construct a new building for Pellston Public Schools. (WIOA eligibility examples include students with IEPs, 504s, foster or homeless students, and other factors; see below.)

The 1,740 square-foot pole building will be used as a future classroom for Career and Technical Education programs. Students will develop skills such as safety, using construction equipment and materials, building design, site preparation, standard construction practices, and residential construction techniques.

After the completion of the building construction, students will have an opportunity to participate in a one-week job shadow with local construction employers, where they will further apply the foundational skills they have learned, this time in the context of a different construction site. The instructor will monitor job shadow placements at least twice per week, reinforcing employability skill application, ensuring safety guidelines are in place, and providing additional instruction or support the student may need. Northwest Michigan Works! will contract with Char-Em ISD over the course of the construction project and job shadow.

Through its Young Professionals program, Northwest Michigan Works! will provide to each student a tool kit and work boots they can use during the job shadowing experience and to keep after the program is completed. Included in the tool kit are those items typically used by construction workers, including safety glasses, hammer, pry bar, tape measure, tool belt, hard hat, razor knife, and a speed square.

Throughout the program and the job shadow, students will receive a stipend of $14.00/hour.
