CPI – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training: Trauma 2023-24

This training is for participants who have not taken Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training (NVCI) within the last two years. Trauma considerations will be highlighted throughout the training. This training meets a portion of the requirements for key identified personnel, as required by the Michigan Department of Education’s Policy for the Emergency Use of Seclusion and Restraint.

Content will be delivered in a virtual and in-person format. Virtual modules (2 hours) will be asynchronous, provided through an email link, 7-10 days prior to in-person training. (Must be completed prior to in-person training.) In-person training will review concepts and provide teaching and practice of physical interventions. Total training of 8  hours.

Learner Outcomes

Identify and know how to respond to varying levels of crisis behaviors.

Develop limit-setting strategies to de-escalate crisis behavior.

Understand the importance of proactive strategies to reduce crisis behavior.

Understand the principles of Trauma Informed Care.

Understand the risks of restraints and their use only as a last resort.

Learn safety interventions and review physical skills to maximize safety and minimize harm.
