Manipulative use is recommended because it is supported by both learning theory and educational research in the classroom. Manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. This two day series will focus on using manipulatives to help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge so that they gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Manipulatives explored during this session include unifix cubes, pattern blocks, tangrams, base ten blocks, Cuisenaire rods, two-color counters, and playing cards.

Participants will:

  • deepen their own understanding of the importance of using manipulatives.
  • participate in activities to experience learning with manipulatives.
  • leave with new ideas to try with students.
