Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong
Dates
July 31-Sept. 29
Online, self-paced
Emily Hanford has been working in public media for more than two decades as a reporter, producer, editor, news director and program host. In 2022, Hanford released her most recent work, a six-episode podcast titled, “Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong.” Through the series, Hanford surfaces how research about the “science of reading” intersects with current methods, causing educators across the country to reflect on their practices and mindsets about how students learn to read.
This course is self-paced and asynchronous; therefore, you can complete your learning and application when it works best for you (ensuring that all work is done between July 31 and September 29, 2023 for SCECH credit). Participants will listen to each of the six (6) episodes of Sold a Story. Following each episode, participants will reflect on the content and respond to questions, intended to compel participants to think critically about what they learned.
