The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention program is designed to teach participants critical skills for preventing and defusing disruptive or risk behavior. It meets the State Board of Education policy on the use of seclusion and restraint, and the requirements to have staff appropriately trained in techniques when emergency restraint is required. Policy requires schools to have behavioral support systems, awareness training for all instructional staff, and comprehensive training for key identified staff. Successful participants will be certified through the Crisis Prevention Institute.

Participants will be able to:

  • identify behavior that indicates an escalation toward aggressive and violent behavior
  • learn appropriate measures to avoid, decelerate, and/or de-escalate crisis situations
  • assess the level of risk associated with crisis behavior and make appropriate decisions related to the management of such risks
  • learn suitable and acceptable physical interventions to reduce a manage risk behavior
  • identify the impact of crisis events and describe post-intervention responses that can be used for personal and organizational support and learning
