If you need transportation for your child, you must select one of the transportation options during the registration process.

What is Career Academy for Kids?

CA4K is a three-day summer program of enrichment classes operated by Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District. Classes are designed to help students currently enrolled in grades 2-8 experience a particular field of interest in-depth and hands-on. Camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.

Where does Career Academy for Kids take place?

Career Academy for Kids will be held in three locations in 2021, Harbor Springs Middle School/Shay Elementary and NEW for 2021, Boyne Falls Public School campus! The High Flyers course will take place at Pellston Regional Airport.

When can students register for CA4K?

What is the cost? Is transportation available?

The cost for Career Academy for Kids is $80, which includes breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt! Char-Em ISD will provide specific transportation routes at no additional charge. Look for transportation registration details during the online course registration process. (Note: transportation is not provided to Pellston Regional Airport for the High Flyers class.) Transportation routes are detailed at the bottom of this page. 

What about COVID-19?

Char-Em ISD’s CTE staff are optimistic that CA4K and the Welding Academy will be able to proceed as planned. If it becomes necessary to postpone or cancel the camps, we will announce that decision as soon as possible.

@Harbor Springs Middle School/Shay Elementary

Fun with Nature
Current grades: 2, 3, 4
Instructor: Jessa LaBlance
Description: If you enjoy being outdoors, exploring nature, and being an active observer, you’ll love our daily hikes or outdoor activities to explore animals, birds, plants, landscapes, insects, fish, and more in nature. Dress for the weather and outdoor adventures.

Deer Blind Building
Current grades: 6, 7, 8
Instructor: Birchwood Construction
Description: In this new course offering, a Birchwood Construction employee will guide students through building a deer blind for hunters who have pre-ordered. All materials and tools will be provided. While the focus is on building a blind, students will learn the skills they need to build structures of all sizes and for all purposes in this class!

Outdoor Explorers
Current Grades: 6, 7, 8 
Instructor: Beth Christiansen
Description: Take your love of nature outdoors! Get wet and dirty as you learn about ecosystems of the Great Lakes and the organisms that live in them. Work side-by-side with biologists and learn why and how they are conserving species and habitats in your backyard.

Photography: Tourist in your own Town!
Current grades: 4, 5, 6
Instructor: Beth Anne Piehl
Description: Do you love Northern Michigan and want to share its beauty with the world? We do, too! In this course, you will learn basic photography skills first, then we will visit some of Harbor Springs’ most treasured spots to capture creative photographs. Next, we’ll turn your images into promotional pieces to share through social media and in print brochures by learning graphic design basics. Cameras will be provided, or bring your own! Shark Tank Char-Em
Current grades: 6, 7, 8
Instructor: Georgia Abbott 
Description: In this new offering, students will develop a business idea, create and build a prototype, and ultimately pitch their idea to Char-Em’s very own panel of Shark Tank-like judges. We hope to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs by experimenting with the best start-up tools and supports!

UAVs 1-2-3!
Current grades: 5, 6, 7, 8 
Instructor: Enos Bacon IV
Description: This course is designed to provide basic knowledge of drones, also known officially as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). It will include essential topics of operational training, safety, flight basics, drone building and careers utilizing UAVs. Drones are on the forefront of technology; their many uses are just being realized for organizations, businesses, public safety, deliveries, and individual hobby enjoyment.


@Boyne Falls Public School

CA4K Chopped!
Current grades: 6, 7, 8
Instructor: Jon Kirk
Kids will have an exploration in cooking with fun and tasty recipes while gaining valuable experience that can be used in their home kitchens. Chef-led cooking activities and instructions are designed to help students familiarize themselves with a home kitchen.

Char-Em Med
Current Grades: 6, 7, 8
Instructor: Riley Peterson
Description: In this new and exciting course students will get to participate in hands-on activities all related to the Health Occupations field. Activities will include patient simulators, North Central Michigan College’s anatomage (anatomy) table, a tour of NCMC’s health care program, and a visit to the local humane society.

Current grades: 2, 3, 4
Instructor: Amy Klopf
Description: Do you love a good challenge and technology? Do you enjoy creativity and working with your hands? Explore the world of coding and robotics by building, coding, and playing with robots. Learn about free coding resources, too, through challenges, competitions, and much more.

Fired up for the future!
Current Grades: 2,3,4
Instructor: Kelly Miller
Description: Let’s get excited thinking and dreaming about the future! What will that future look like when it comes to jobs, technology, health care, transportation, even space travel and our daily life here on Earth? We will spend time exploring the future through interactive activities, arts-and-crafts, career discovery via tours, guest presenters and creating a time capsule. Career areas explored may include public safety, information technology (IT), hospitality/tourism, science, engineering, communications, military, manufacturing, health care and other exciting opportunities.

Lego Robotics 
Current grades: 5, 6, 7 
Instructor: Cindi Place
Description: Explore the world of coding and robotics by building, coding, and programming Lego Mindstorm robots. Compete against your friends to see whose imagination and creativity can build and program the better robot in all sorts of fun challenges.

Public Safety Challenge 
Current grades: 5, 6, 7, 8
Instructor: James Cousino 
Description: Each day, students will learn hands-on activities taught by Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and Law Enforcement professionals. Patient simulators, mock crime scenes, and investigations are part of this exciting class. See actual fire trucks and ambulances and try out the equipment they use. Respond and investigate a simulated crime scene, look for evidence, interview suspects, and catch the bad guy!


High Flyers
Current grades: 6, 7, 8
Instructor: Winston Wiebel
Come fly with us and navigate the exciting world of aviation in this high-flying class and be introduced to the basics of flying. Hand-on activities include designing aerofoils (airplane wing), building with STEM kits, and flight simulators. Meet with real pilots, tour planes, and get a chance to sit in the pilot’s seat. Do not wait to book your ticket or you might miss the flight!

There is no additional cost for transportation. However, you must register your student for transportation when you register them for Career Academy for Kids, in order to reserve them a seat as space will be limited.
