At 18, a child reaches the “age of majority” and is considered an adult. This means they can make legal, educational, health and other decisions for themselves. Guardianship is a legal proceeding in court that gives the power\nfor such decisions to another individual, sometimes a parent, on behalf of an individual with a disability. Because guardianship deprives an individual of their rights and often makes them more, not less, vulnerable, it should\nbe considered with caution and only used when necessary. For that reason, it is important to look at alternatives to guardianship as well. This session will provide information about guardianship and alternatives for youth with disabilities and their families.\nPresenters\n▪ The Hon. Valerie Snyder, Emmet & Charlevoix County Probate Judge\n▪ Robert Banner, Attorney\nRepresentatives from Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Disability Network Northern Michigan, Michigan Alliance for Families and Career Prep Specialists will be on hand.\n \n\n
