Special Education Programs
Special education programs operated by Char-Em ISD consist of classrooms located at Boyne Valley Education Center in Boyne Falls, Patricia A. Taylor School for Exceptional Learners in Petoskey and in several of our local school districts.
Several classrooms are designed to provide a special education program option for students who have, or function as if they have, moderate or severe cognitive impairment. Placement consideration should only be made following implementation of comprehensive intervention plans that have included curriculum modification and intensive intervention by special education personnel. Students participate in state assessments based upon alternate achievement standards.
Additional classrooms provide an educational environment that supports students with severe emotional and behavioral needs whose physical behavior is so aggressive the student is unable to access the general education curriculum through meaningful participation in the local district setting. Lessons are designed to support students academically and emotionally to enable students to continue to participate and progress toward grade level standards.
