Literacy

Literacy consultant services are available to all local districts in the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District. Our goal is to ensure effective leadership and instruction that results in the development of students' independent literacy skills. Districts have access to a broad range of services Pre-K through 12th grade that support the goal of Michigan's state standards. These standards expect that all students who are college or career ready in literacy exhibit the following skills:

  • Demonstrate independence
  • Build strong content knowledge
  • Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline
  • Comprehend as well as critique
  • Value evidence
  • Use technology and digital media strategically and capably
  • Understand other perspectives and cultures

Students who achieve these standards will have the cross-disciplinary literacy skills that will help them succeed in college, career, and lifelong learning.

Services are provided both onsite at the school building level and through area wide professional learning opportunities. Current research provides the foundation for all literacy support. Services align with research in the areas of developmentally appropriate practices, the use of assessments to inform instruction, and a balanced approach to literacy instructional strategies. The ISD Literacy Plan for service delivery is based on assessment data and local, state, and federal initiatives.
